二十一世纪，江南写《龙族》时，曾经借人物之口这么说过：
可人不是断气的时候才真的死了。有人说人会死三次，第一次是他断气的时候，在生物学上他死了；第二次是他下葬的时候，人们来参加他的葬礼，怀念他的一生，然后他在社会中死了，不再有他的位置；第三次是最后一个记得他的人把他忘记的时候，那时候他才真的死了。
如果一部动画片要为孩子们提供一个面对生死的故事，很难有比《寻梦环游记》更活泼、感动和有趣的了。
该片的灵感源于墨西哥亡灵节，讲述了热爱音乐的小男孩米格尔和落魄乐手埃克托在五彩斑斓的神秘世界开启了一段奇妙冒险旅程的故事。热爱音乐的米格出生在一个憎恶音乐的家庭，他的家人为了让他远离音乐，摔坏了他的吉他。米格为了追寻音乐梦想，误入了亡灵的世界。
如果天亮之前他不能得到家人的祝福，就不能回到活人的世界，而且他答应这个祝福的同时，也必须执行家人在这个祝福上附加的所有条件。
曾曾奶奶在祝福上附加了“再也不碰音乐”的条件后，米格先答应，然后又反悔，再一次回到了亡灵世界。他认识到，如果不能承诺放弃音乐，就回不去了。他思量挣扎后，对着这群家人说道：“没有音乐，我跟死了也没什么区别！”
这是一部关于天赋与梦想，家庭与责任的故事，豆瓣上看完的影迷说：毕竟我已经很久没有看个电影哭得像个小孩子了，电影是绝佳的造梦机器。那些回不去的家乡，没能守护的家人也只有在梦里相见。
